Founded in 1993, the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics (the Institute) was formed by a group of local acousticians with an aim to promote the knowledge and practice of acoustics as well as to maintain and present the integrity and status of the profession to the public and the government.

Sound is one of our valuable resources and may vary, diminish or even disappear as the development goes on. The Hong Kong Soundscape – A Sound Map Creation Competition is one of the activities in celebration of the Institute’s 25th anniversary in 2018. It serves to create a sound library with the general public and to encourage preservation of soundmark and sound from the place we live.
To raise public awareness of soundscape in Hong Kong
To create a sound map for public education, tourism promotion and promotion of the importance of local soundscape
To promote the idea of treating sound as resources and the importance of ambient sound environment
To encourage preservation of soundmark and sound from community and local cultural activities by creating a record or sound library
To lay the groundwork for future discussion on practical and policy application of soundscape concepts in urban design in Hong Kong
